Chandra, Jordan & Trae Berns

experienced first-hand the hardships that come along with being a burn survivor. The triplets were in a house fire when they were 17 months old that left them with third degree burns and clinging onto life. While the triplets were in critical condition at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, sadly, their mother passed away. Doctors were positive that the three sisters would not make it to see morning. Miraculously though, all three of the girls would survive. At the time, they were much too young to understand their loss. The girls fought their way back to recovery, which meant countless surgeries, as well as, years of physical and occupational therapy.

Growing up was not the easiest for the girls. They tried to pay no attention to the rumors, whispers, and cruel remarks from other kids and adults. Eventually though, they began to feel more comfortable hiding their burns rather than dealing with the ill heartedness of others. At the end of every day, the girls clung to their faith and each other for support and guidance. They shared a special bond that could not be broken.

As the girls got older, they began to develop a passion for helping others. In high school, the girls were constantly involved in different organizations that performed community service. The girls volunteered at events, visited nursing homes and animal shelters, helped feed the homeless and much more. When the girls were 17 years old, the passion for helping others turned into the vivid dream of starting their own non-profit organization one day. They wanted to help other burn survivors and their families, somehow. The girls knew that they had been blessed to have each other to lean on, but knew that not everyone was given that same opportunity. They wanted to become that support for others to turn to.

The sisters thought of ways to work towards their dream, but knew that they had to get their education first if this was going to become successful. So, that is exactly what they did. Chandra, Jordan and Trae graduated from high school and attended college at the University of Texas at San Antonio to obtain their degrees.

While school was a top priority for the three sisters, the dream they shared just a few years prior would not subside. They thought and talked about it constantly to each other. They knew that somewhere out there, there was someone facing the long road to recovery alone and with no one to turn to. They knew that there were burn survivors around the world that needed their help.

So, the girls then decided they needed to take action, now. After building and surrounding themselves with a great team to work with, in July 2009, the triplets fearlessly and ambitiously launched the Three for Hope Foundation. For Chandra, Jordan, and Trae Berns - this was the beginning of bringing change to the world – one burn survivor at a time.
